Theatre for a Change Fundraiser
Wednesday, May 10, 2017, 07:00pm - 09:00pm

On Wednesday May 10th, Sheatre – a Grey Bruce based professional community arts organization – will host a fundraising evening of education and music at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library at 7pm. Philly Markowitz – former host of CBC’s Roots and Wings – will host the evening which will also feature presentations from artists and educators involved with Sheatre projects.

Founded in 1985, Sheatre has produced 112 original plays or theatre forum presentations and almost 500 events for over 96,000 people in Canada, the US, and England. Sheatre’s catalogue ranges from drama to comedy and musical events to multidisciplinary art showcases, all created to capture local histories and present contemporary issues. Most recently, Sheatre has toured shows about living with dementia, teen dating violence, homophobia, and Tom Thomson.

According to Sheatre’s founder and Artistic Director Joan Chandler, Sheatre’s goal is to use art to change the world. It might sound like an idealistic approach but Sheatre’s 32 year history and multiple awards prove that it works. On May 10th, musicians, actors, and educators who have worked with Sheatre’s most recent projects will explain why art is an effective tool for change, share stories from the road, and perform musical selections from Sheatre’s catalogue. A short documentary about Be Our Ally – Sheatre’s play about homophobia – will also be shown. Admission is $20 at the door and full tax receipts are available. Birgit’s Pastry Café will cater the event to pair delicious treats with Sheatre’s food for thought. All are welcome.
